Learn the key differences between G9 LED and halogen bulbs, including brightness, dimming, lifespan, and fitting. Make an informed switch with practical advice.

Quick answer

If you're replacing a halogen G9 bulb, switch to an LED G9 capsule bulb with a compatible dimmer. Look for a warm 2700K colour temperature and check the lumens rather than wattage for brightness.

Brightness vs wattage: what changes with LED

With halogen G9 bulbs, wattage was a reliable brightness indicator. A 40W halogen gave a certain light output. LED G9 bulbs use far fewer watts for the same or higher lumens. For example, a 3.7W LED capsule can produce 430 lumens, roughly equivalent to a 40W halogen. When comparing, always look at lumens, not watts.

Dimming compatibility matters

Not all G9 LED bulbs are dimmable. If your light fixture has a dimmer switch, you need a specifically labelled dimmable G9 capsule bulb. Even then, some older dimmers may not work smoothly with LED loads. You may need to replace the dimmer with an LED-compatible model. The LED Glass Dimmable Bulb - 3.7W 2 Pin Capsule G9 is designed for dimmable circuits, making it a straightforward swap.

Lifespan and heat: LED vs halogen

Halogen G9 bulbs run hot and typically last around 2,000 hours. LED G9 bulbs generate far less heat and can last up to 15,000 hours, reducing replacement frequency. The lower heat output also puts less stress on nearby fixture components. However, the compact size of G9 LED bulbs can limit heat dissipation, so ensure the fixture allows some airflow.

Decision rules for switching to G9 LED bulbs

Check the base type: G9 bulbs have a two-pin base. Measure the pin spacing (9mm) and ensure your fixture uses a G9 holder. If in doubt, remove your old bulb and compare.
Match brightness to your needs: Look for lumens, not watts. For a typical 40W halogen replacement, aim for 400-500 lumens. For a 60W halogen replacement, look for 600-800 lumens. Write down the lumens you need before shopping.
Choose a dimmable version if you use a dimmer: Only buy bulbs explicitly labelled as dimmable. The LED Glass Dimmable Bulb 3.7W is one such option. Test your dimmer after installation; if flickering occurs, replace the dimmer with an LED-rated model. Keep your old halogen bulb as a backup until you confirm dimmer compatibility.
Consider colour temperature: Most G9 LED bulbs come in warm white (2700K) or cool white (4000K+). For a similar feel to halogen, choose 2700K. For a brighter, more modern look, choose 3000K or higher.
Check physical size: G9 LED capsules vary slightly in length and width. Compare dimensions with your fixture's glass shade or cover to ensure the bulb fits without touching the sides. Measure the space inside your fixture before ordering.

Who should switch to G9 LED bulbs?

Best for

Anyone replacing a halogen G9 bulb in a dimmable fixture who wants lower energy bills and longer bulb life
Users who want a warm, clear light similar to halogen but with less heat output

Not ideal for

Fixtures with non-standard pin spacing or incompatible dimmers that cannot be replaced
Applications requiring very high brightness (above 1000 lumens) where multiple bulbs are not feasible
