Learn how to hang a painting on plaster or brick without studs: match fixings to the wall, spot the warning signs of failure, and know when to stop.
Quick answer
For plasterboard, use a hollow-wall anchor rated for your painting's weight; for brick or masonry, use a masonry plug and screw. Never rely on a nail alone in either material.
Why plaster and brick fail in different ways
Plasterboard is a thin skin over a void, so a fixing must spread its load behind the board. Brick is solid but brittle: drilling too close to an edge or into a mortar joint can crack the face or loosen the fixing.
That difference explains why a fixing that feels secure in one wall can pull straight out of the other. Match the fixing to the material before you drill, not after the hook moves.
When the wall, not the fixing, is the problem
Crumbling plaster, hollow-sounding patches, or a wall that flexes under hand pressure point to a substrate that may not hold any anchor reliably. In those cases, stop and get the wall assessed rather than upsizing the fixing.
Diagnose your wall before you drill
- Symptom: the fixing pulls out or spins: Likely cause: a hollow-wall anchor too small for the load, or one installed where the board is crumbly. Corrective action: remove it, move at least 50 mm away, and fit a larger hollow-wall anchor rated for the painting's weight. Stop if the new hole also crumbles. If two anchors fail in the same area, treat the wall as unsuitable and seek advice.
- Symptom: the drill bit wanders or the brick cracks: Likely cause: drilling without a masonry bit, or drilling into a mortar joint or too near an edge. Corrective action: use a masonry bit, start with a small pilot hole, and keep at least 50 mm from edges and joints. Stop if a crack spreads. A cracked brick needs a professional assessment before you hang anything on it.
- Symptom: the painting hangs crooked or the hook loosens: Likely cause: a single fixing carrying an off-centre load, or a screw that is too short for the plug. Corrective action: use two fixings set level, and choose a screw long enough to engage the full plug. Stop if the wall sounds hollow around either fixing. Two well-spaced fixings share the load and keep the frame level.
Product facts
- B11: Abstract oil painting by Ondřej Rypáček, catalog price USD 2040.00 (comparison price USD 3000.00). A piece at this price deserves a fixing rated well above its weight, so check the anchor's safe load before hanging.
